KUALA LUMPUR, March 24 (Bernama) – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has launch the National Broadband Initiative and High Speed Broadband (HSBB) that aim to drive the social and economic transformation towards achieving the high-income nation objective. The RM11.3 billion project is a public-private partnership initiative between TM and the government to develop next generation HSBB infrastructure and services for the nation.

BROADBAND: It is a high- speed, high capacity internet access is always on. With a higher speed of data transmission, broadband allows more content to be carried through.

1. High Speed Broadband

NBI is a comprehensive strategy in which HSBB is one of its components. Through the USP (Universal Service Provision) program specific attention will be given to rural areas like Sabah and Sarawak to build telecommunications towers and community broadband centers.

2. Broadband Achievements

According to Maradevis (2008) the broadband penetration in Malaysia is currently 33.2% in early March. It is low compared to the other developed Asian nations like Singapore (78%), Hong Kong (80%) and Korea (93%). The Malaysian government has set a national broadband target of 50% household penetration 2010.

3. Broadband Advantages

Improving the quality of life: The government plan to make all electronic things can achievable with the help of broadband. The idea of having good e-Government services in Malaysia can be further enhanced with the proper tools offered by broadband. With the additional services provided by all telecommunications companies, the broadband industry will grow and help the building of this nation as a developed country.

Smooth connection all way: The launch of HSBB will result in a change of lifestyle and gain in productivity. Broadband penetration is a catalyst for increased efficiencies in existing economic activities, and also generates new services, which contribute towards increasing the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

In need of speed and stability: The Increasingly sophisticated needs of users have also made it imperative for hi-speed broadband and connection to also offer stability. Technology that involves at breakneck speed also means that in order to remain competitive among the nations of the world, a speedy and stable broadband connection is absolutely vital.

4. Broadband Barriers

The low broadband rate is attributed mainly to the high cost of infrastructure, as well as lack of demand and awareness of the benefits of broadband.

Government assured, all these are being looked and researched by MCMC (Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission) to ensure that the ‘rakyat’ enjoy high quality broadband meant to benefit them.
